MacBook Pro, checked by Apple part number

MacBook Pro models with Thunderbolt 5

Chip tier decides whether these MacBook Pro models have Thunderbolt 5. The 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch versions with M4 Pro, M4 Max, M5 Pro or M5 Max have three TB5 ports. The similar 14-inch base M5 model has three TB4 ports, so 'MacBook Pro with M5' is not specific enough. Check the complete chip name and Apple part number together. That number also distinguishes the screen size, unified memory, storage and whether the machine is new or Apple Certified Refurbished.

The chip name decides the port standard

Apple uses the same MacBook Pro name across different screen sizes, years and chip tiers. On the models tracked here, M4 Pro, M4 Max, M5 Pro and M5 Max are the versions with three TB5 ports. The 14-inch base M5 version, identified as Mac17,2, has three TB4 ports instead. A retailer title such as '14-inch MacBook Pro with M5' therefore does not confirm TB5. Look for the complete chip name in the title and checkout summary, then use the Apple part number to confirm that the listing matches the configuration you intended to buy.

An Apple part number identifies a retail configuration more precisely than the family name. MGDR4LL/A is a 14-inch M5 Pro model with 24GB of unified memory and a 1TB SSD, while MGEA4LL/A is a 16-inch M5 Pro configuration with the same memory and storage amounts. These configurations show unified memory and no separate graphics-memory amount. Condition is part of the identity too: FX2E3LL/A and FX2T3LL/A are Apple Certified Refurbished M4 Pro configurations.

These Apple silicon Macs do not support an external graphics processor, usually called an eGPU, through Thunderbolt 5. Buy the built-in chip and integrated Apple GPU that fit your work because the graphics cannot be upgraded with a desktop card later. The three TB5 ports are still useful for displays, docks and external storage. If an eGPU is part of your desk plan, none of the MacBook Pro configurations on this page meets that requirement.

Buying guidance

Choosing between the MacBook Pro models

  • Choose between 14.2 and 16.2 inches first, then confirm M4 Pro, M4 Max, M5 Pro or M5 Max. A base M5 14-inch model belongs to the TB4 group.
  • Match the full Apple part number, unified memory, storage and condition. FX2E3LL/A and FX2T3LL/A are Apple Certified Refurbished configurations.
  • Plan the three TB5 ports for displays, docks and external storage. Apple silicon Macs do not support an external GPU through those ports.
